Three blogs in as many days? Yeah I know! Don’t get used to this.
I’m just using this a way of sharing thoughts and updates on my career. And today, I thought I would share some thoughts.
Recently, I’ve rewatched two movies that I highly recommend. They’re not great movies in the sense of bigblowemup summer movies, but they’re GOOD movies-and I would like to recommend them both because… well… I relate to the main characters in my own Jose way. The first one is a B-movie cult (modern) classic, Bubba Ho-tep. It stars Bruce Campbell as an elderly Elvis Presley, who in fact (per this movie-not me) did not die. He lives in a rest home with another previously thought dead American icon. Former President John F. Kennedy. Of course, in a movie like this, there’s an extra twist to his character. He’s black. Because, “they died me this color”. The home is being quietly tormented by a mummy. There’s more to it, but I’ll leave it up to you to watch it and find out what happens and how these two public figures are still Takin Care of Business. But its not so much the main plot that gets me. It the scenes where you observe how Elvis (and the other residents) are treated by the younger staff and visitors. Even as a younger man, I know the feeling… but I digress.
The other movie is one called Cashback. It’s about a guy who has insomnia so he decides to get a job working the graveyard shift. Those who know me better, know that I occasionally suffer from this problem and that I work a graveyeard shift for pretty much the same reason. I do it for acting availablilty as well. When I saw the trailer for this, I immediately went out and bought it. The main characters insomnia, as well as many other things, strikes so close to home. It’s such a beautifully done movie, based on a short film-which is seamlessly put in, with only the narration slightly changed. The opening is one of the best moments, to me, caught on film. Now be warned, they’re not kidding on the back of the DVD, under the rating, where it says GRAPHIC nudity. But it’s there for a reason; it is necessary to the developement of the main character, Ben. Don’t worry, I’m not recommending some kind of soft core porn or anything. It’s just the graphic nudity, no sexual acts or anything.
If you watch either of these, I’m interested to hear your take on them. I only know a few who have seen Bubba, but only one or two who have seen Cashback. TCB, baby.
That’s all from the pulpit today.
